The AFA will give a 2027 annual meeting session to finance papers written mostly by AI

Projects had to start from a first prompt on or after 1 June 2026 and reach the organizers by 31 August, with every AI conversation attached.

AI Fin Research

The American Finance Association posted the call on 26 May 2026 for a special session at its 2027 annual meeting. The organizers are Wei Jiang of Goizueta Business School, who chairs the session, Itay Goldstein of the Wharton School, Robert Novy-Marx of the Simon Graduate School of Business and William Mann of Goizueta.

The call asks for entirely new projects that are “predominantly generated by AI”, on any topic fit for a top finance journal. Work had to begin on or after 1 June 2026 with a first prompt to an LLM or an AI agent, and the deadline was 31 August 2026. Only the named authors may do human work. They submit every AI conversation, a time log of human activity and a report on the fraction of lines of code, writing and documentation that humans contributed.

Human reviewers choose four papers on the research contribution and on the design and effectiveness of the AI workflow. All high-quality submissions go into an AFA 2027 online collection. Discussants are asked to assess the human labor in each paper and to say what AI-generated finance research lacks. The organizers state that they will not use non-public information from the submissions in their own research.
